Maybe pounding on the door that late at night wasn’t the best idea, but Joey didn’t think about it until he saw the barrel of a shotgun move the curtain over the window in the door.

“I don’t know who the fuck you are, but I’m not afraid to shoot.”

God, this woman was going to be the death of him. What had he been thinking when he’d went to bat for her with Stefano? Convincing him that Murphey needed a friend and Alaska was the woman for the job?

You’d been thinking with your dick, but we don’t have time for that now. Get her calmed down, so she doesn’t shoot you on the spot.

“Alaska. My name is Joey Rossi.”

“And?” The gun moved and Alaska’s face appeared in the window for only a second. “What do you want Joey Rossi?”

“Murphey sent me. She’s worried about you.”

There was a pause before she looked out the window again.

Joey knew the little bit of light illuminating the porch wasn’t enough for her to make out his features, but he had a feeling that she was looking past him. Making sure he was alone.

“She told me to say ‘sandbox.’” He watched as the woman visibly relaxed and unlocked the door.

She held it open for him, just enough for him to squeeze by, and as soon as he was in, the door shut, and the gun was leveled on him. “What the fuck happened?”

“He hurt her.”

The shotgun shook slightly, but she recovered quickly and looked him in the eye. It was then that her eyes went wide, and recognition hit. “You’re the guy from the picture, the guy from the dreams.”

“I was in the car accident with her, yes.”

“Tell me.” The gun was no longer shaking, in fact, Alaska stood there steadier than ever.

“We don’t have time.”

“You’re damn well going to make time. That woman has been denied the ability to figure out her past for too long. Tell me.”

Stepping forward, Joey pushed the gun to the side with his thigh and stepped into her space. The need to wrap his hand around her throat to guarantee he had her attention was near too much to handle, but he managed to refrain. “Stefano beat her tonight. Took a cane to her, broke the skin in multiple places, probably did a bit of damage to her kidneys, and generally beat the shit out of her until she was a crying, curled up ball on the floor. Hell, he was still coming at her when I ran into the room. He only stopped because I didn’t give him a choice. Even after all that, she was still trying to get dressed and come warn you because she heard him put a hit out on you. After all of that, she was worried about you and I will be damned if I am going to let your stubborn ass keep me from keeping my promise to protect you. Now, put the fucking gun down, grab your fucking purse and let’s get the fuck out of here.
